Fourth of July Brunch

For many years, the neighborhood has gathered on the 4th of July in one of the neighborhood parks to enjoy a pot luck.

July 4, 2026

Over 120 people joined us for a neighborhood and Eastgate celebration of our nation's 250th birthday!  It was held at Parkway Park (bisects Marsteller Ave.) where there is always morning shade and a breeze. We had a great potluck lunch with donated coffee from Gabrielle's Coffee Shop at Texas Ave. and Walton.

The potluck was awash with donuts, blueberry scones, bacon and egg biscuits, tomato and egg bakes, sausage kolaches, coffee cake, watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, chips and dips, pop tarts, and a whole lot more!  Thanks to everyone for bringing chairs and tables and enjoying a shady brunch!

The Children's Parade started at 9 a.m. and the potluck followed.  Photos below are from the 2026 Brunch.

History

In 2021, the morning brunch was held on Saturday July 3 under Mabel Clare Thomas Park's pavilion because of potential rain.  The annual cherry seed spitting contest was again won by Mr. Justin Kling, who beat his own record for a whopping 31 feet!  Below he is proclaimed champion in 2021 by Joel Cantrell, Association president.  A water balloon toss ended with teammates Donny Banks and Justin Kling as the winners.

In 2022, we moved to Parkway Park and again had a wonderful time sharing baked goods, fruit and coffee, good conversation, and, of course, the annual cherry seed spitting contest!

2024 and 2025 found us in Parkway Park with shade and a breeze to go with iced coffee and brunch treats.  We were all surprised at how cool and comfortable it was under the trees.  Great conversation and seed spitting!  In 2025, the Cherry Pit Spitting Contest winner was David Hart, with a 30 ft. effort!
